Widely known as football, soccer has quickly become one of the worlds most popular sports, if not the most popular. But who invented soccer? Who should we be thankful towards for the invention of soccer, this great game? How was it that soccer came into existence?

The invention of soccer is still regarded as quite a big mystery. Many countries claim them game for themselves. However, early evidence suggests that the game was created over 2000 years ago in either China or Japan. Teams would use their feet to kick around a leather ball. China and Japan would compete against each other in soccer.

Artefacts from the United States dating over 6000 years have also been discovered that may suggest the games invention was there. Stone balls were used in a game called “cuju” (kickball).

Who Invented Soccer - The Game Today

But who was it that formalised the game into the competitive and globalised sport it is today? The English created the first league in the early 1800’s, and the Football Association was formed in 1863. Soccer soon spread fast, first across Europe, before taking the world by storm. The last few decades have seen the biggest increase in the popularity of soccer, especially in juniors, inspired by the awesome skills of the professionals.
